Fear of Water, or Aquaphobia

A fear of water, or aquaphobia, affects more adults than people realize.
In some countries, nearly half of all adults say they are afraid of drowning and are afraid of deep water—even in a swimming pool!

For some people, it will be the feeling of’to have water in your nose or ears or the act of to put one's head under water which will trigger a near-panic.

For others—who, incidentally, are very good swimmers in the pool—it will be the fear of the sea and not to see the bottom or to imagine animals around them.

The Consequences of a Fear of Water

Aquaphobia is not just a “little fear.”.
The most commonly cited effects of a fear of water include an increased heart rate, sweating, and shivering, as well as a feeling of suffocation, nausea, dizziness…

This fear can ruin vacations, limit sports activities, and prevent boat trips...
But it can also prevent someone from learning to swim and put that person at risk in the future.

Understanding Fear of Water in Adults

A fear of water may be linked to a traumatic event.
For example, if you've experienced a dramatic fall into the water—a near-drowning.
In that case, consult a psychologist who can best help you and who may, for example, use techniques such as CBT or EMDR.

But often, a fear of water is a «learned» fear that becomes increasingly significant and debilitating over time.
This is a well-known mechanism behind the development of many fears: our survival mechanisms amplify the threat to “protect” us, but the more we avoid water, the more our brain receives confirmation that water is dangerous.
This creates a vicious cycle: fear → avoidance → relief → increased fear.

This may initially be triggered by a parent’s aversion to water, by family stories, and also by the influence of certain movies.
Many customers cite the movie *Jaws* as the reason for their fear of swimming in the ocean!

For some people, there is also the a feeling of losing control of their bodies in the water, whether they're floating or, on the contrary, feel like they're sinking when their heads are underwater…
This will cause them to tense up even more, which will intensify their fear.

The Case of the Fear of the Sea:

The fear of swimming in the ocean (sometimes called thalassophobia or aquaphobia (depending on the causes) can be explained by several factors, often linked to a combination of instinctive fears and personal experiences:

  • Fear of the unknown and a lack of control :
The ocean is a vast, deep, and unpredictable environment, which can trigger anxiety about what we cannot see (marine creatures, currents, etc.).
  • Fear of Marine Animals :
Movies, stories, or even the imagination can heighten people’s fear of sharks, jellyfish, or other creatures.
  • A bad experience in the past (drowning, a sudden wave, etc.) can leave a lasting impact.
  • Feeling of vulnerability :
Being out in deep water, far from shore, can make you feel as though you’ve lost your bearings and sense of security.

Sophie, 38 years — panic at the sérénité

« Just the sound of the water in the pool at a friend’s house would cause me a lot of stress; I was ashamed not to go in, so I’d make up excuses. And when my kids were playing around it, I’d start to panic…

Through hypnosis, I focused mainly on relaxation and positive visualization—to help me stay calm when my kids were around a pool (especially since they can swim themselves)—and then to get in the water when I could touch the bottom. That was a huge victory—and finally, it was fun!
I haven't really gotten around to learning how to swim yet—we'll see…

Hypnosis for Fear of Water in Adults:

Hypnosis is a great tool for reducing a fear of water and learning to manage it better.
The goal isn't for you to swim across the English Channel, but rather, for example, to decide to learn how to swim for good, to enjoy a swim in the summer, or to dare to go for a boat ride….

In general, your hypnotherapist will combine different techniques :

  • Deep relaxation techniques, creating a “safe place,” and grounding yourself in calm so that you can use these techniques on your own later,
  • Transform your mental images associated with water or difficult situations into something positive—such as a resource or a source of pleasure—rather than a threat,
  • Positive visualization techniques such as swimming, floating, or simply walking along the shore of a lake in a state of complete serenity. This allows your brain to “experience” a peaceful interaction with water in advance, which accelerates desensitization.
  • Future Outlook and Action Plan: self-hypnosis exercises, graded real-life exposure, mind-body support (breathing, cardiac coherence).

? How many sessions Hypnosis for a Fear of Water?
Between 2 and 4 sessions are often enough to significantly reduce symptoms.

? Is the effect long-lasting? ?
Yes, provided that we maintain our connections and stay close to the water to avoid falling back into the vicious cycle of avoidance.

Combining Hypnosis with Graded Exposure

Swimming pools and aquatic centers often offer gradual exposure programs for people who are afraid of water. However, people with aquaphobia will find it difficult to sign up without some mental preparation to build their motivation.

That is why hypnosis is ideal both before and in combination with these real-world exposure programs.
Preparing the person mentally by fostering a sense of inner security, developing positive images of water, and boosting their motivation will help them sign up and stick with the program until the end.

Would you like to overcome your fear of water?

A fear of water is not inevitable.
With a gentle, respectful, and structured approach, therapeutic hypnosis can help you find a peaceful relationship with water.
