Hypnosis to Better Manage Hypersensitivity

When emotions overwhelm us…

Many people come to us for therapeutic hypnosis to better manage their emotions: fears, anger, sadness…
Some people suffer from the consequences of their high sensitivity and emotional intensity, both in their daily lives and in their relationships.
In fact, it is estimated that 20% of the population is «hypersensitive.».

That’s why I’m writing this article on hypersensitivity.
And if you're a highly sensitive person, How therapeutic hypnosis can help you better cope with your emotions and with your emotional or sensory hypersensitivity.

Hypnosis for Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity

High sensitivity, also known as heightened sensitivity, is a personality trait characterized by an increased sensitivity to emotional, sensory, and environmental stimuli.
As a result, highly sensitive people tend to perceive and react to things more intensely than most people.

This trait was explored by psychologist Elaine Aron, who developed the concept of "highly sensitive personality" (HSP) in the 1990s.

High sensitivity is neither a psychological disorder nor a disease, but a personality trait that manifests in different ways and to varying degrees of sensitivity from person to person.

Nevertheless, hypersensitivity may co-occur with or be linked to physiological conditions or psychological disorders.

Especially if you are experiencing psychological distress or depression, consult your doctor or a psychologist.

Characteristics of Hypersensitivity

Here are some characteristics associated with hypersensitivity.

Of course, not all highly sensitive or highly emotional people exhibit all of these signs, and sometimes these signs may only apply in specific contexts (romantic relationships, professional settings, etc.).

- High emotional reactivity:
Highly sensitive people may experience emotions—whether pleasant or unpleasant—more intensely than most people and are often more likely to feel overwhelmed by emotionally charged situations.
The emotion may then be more intense, last longer than it does for other people, or not be entirely appropriate for the situation.

For example, while watching a movie, in a friendship or romantic relationship, or during stressful situations such as a move, an exam, or a sports competition, emotional reactions (crying, anxiety, joy, etc.) may be intense or change rapidly. This can lead to misunderstandings on the part of those around them.
And in some particularly severe cases, this can lead to severe anxiety or even panic attacks.

- High sensory sensitivity:
Highly sensitive people may be particularly sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, strong smells...
In fact, certain substances—such as caffeine or medications—may have more pronounced effects on some people than on others.

- Environmental awareness:
Changes in the environment or in the social atmosphere around them can have a significant impact on the mood and well-being of highly sensitive people.
They will often feel more at ease in calm, quiet environments where they can retreat to recharge.

- Highly developed empathy:
Highly sensitive people generally have a strong ability to sense and understand the emotions of others.
This can make them good listeners and trusted friends, but it also carries the risk of them empathizing too much with others and feeling other people’s emotions too intensely.

The Case of the Hypersensitive Child

The causes and symptoms of hypersensitivity in children are the same as in adults.

But Since regulating emotions is more difficult for children—especially young children—the consequences of hypersensitivity are exacerbated:
- "unprovoked" fears or tantrums, particularly at the end of the day or after intense emotional or sensory stimulation,
- or, on the contrary, withdrawing into oneself to protect oneself emotionally,
- difficulty coping with changes and transitions, separations, changes in routine...

The Hypersensitive Child pays close attention to what is happening around him, to how he feels, and to how others feel.
IHe is easily moved by what he experiences, what others go through, changes in his environment, and what people are saying around him.
It's hard to take a step back and not react quickly and strongly.

Our specialists in therapeutic hypnosis for children will use metaphors tailored to a child's mental world that will teach them relaxation and stress management techniques to help him or her anticipate and better handle situations that are difficult for him or her.

Benefits and Challenges of Hypersensitivity

High sensitivity presents both advantages and challenges.

The Benefits of Hypersensitivity:

Highly sensitive people can be attentive listeners, empathetic friends, and inspired, intuitive creators.
Being able to sense the emotional state of the person you’re talking to, pick up on the atmosphere, and pay attention to details that others don’t notice is a social and intellectual advantage.

Challenges Caused by Hypersensitivity:

However, they may also feel overwhelmed by too much information, stress, or overstimulation and have trouble managing their emotions and their environment.

This can manifest as anxiety, hypervigilance, impulsive reactions, and hyperactivity. This can lead to a potential vicious cycle caused by the fatigue it induces (mental stress, sleep disturbances, etc.) and a loss of self-confidence,

On a cognitive level, highly sensitive people tend to be introspective.
But This can also lead them to dwell on the past - especially unpleasant experiences - by preventing them from envisioning the future and taking action.

Finally, this can have an impact on their social lives, leading to difficulty connecting with others or expressing their opinions, as well as a certain fear of conflict. Or, conversely, sometimes a «excessive» empathy, hypersensitivity to criticism and reproach, extreme sensitivity, emotional dependence, or a certain emotional «volatility.».

How to Manage Hypersensitivity

Managing hypersensitivity involves:

  • on the one hand, avoidance whenever possible or better management of situations that are too stimulating,
  • On the other hand, learning techniques for emotional self-regulation and stress management.

Highly sensitive people may benefit from techniques such as hypnosis and self-hypnosis, meditation, cardiac coherence, and regular physical exercise.

Hypnosis to Better Manage Hypersensitivity

Hypnosis can be used to help highly sensitive people better understand and manage their emotions, build their self-confidence, and reduce their anxiety.
When someone is in a state of hypnosis, they may be more open to exploring their emotions and working on strategies to better manage their sensitivity.

This may apply to:

  • managing frustration and anger management or aggression,
  • anxiety, hypervigilance or certain fears (social fears, fear of vulnerability, etc.), anxiety, or panic attacks
  • the emotional dependence or get the most out of a a breakup or a bereavement,
  • Find more lightness and a zest for life in everyday life,
  • sensitivity and the’assertiveness,
  • the self-confidence, the image of oneself and self-esteem

What happens during a hypnosis session for hypersensitivity?

1era Each session will always begin with an understanding of your situation and by building a relationship with your therapist, so that he or she can identify the issues that are most important to you, develop a treatment plan, and, of course, help you feel at ease.

A therapeutic hypnosis session then begins with an induction to guide you, at your own pace, into a state of hypnosis—that very pleasant state of half-sleep or waking dream, as some clients describe it.

Based on bodily sensations or by using mental images and metaphors, Therapeutic hypnosis allows you to identify the emotions you are experiencing.
To analyze them and make the connection to certain situations that trigger strong emotional reactions.
And also to identify which inner dialogue comes into play and amplifies the emotions at hand.

You can then move on to developing strategies to better cope with your hypersensitivity:
- identify and anticipate triggering situations,
- put certain events into perspective,
- change certain limiting beliefs or inner dialogue,
- build self-confidence or self-esteem…

Once the therapeutic work is complete, you return to your daily life at your own pace—and often feeling great 😊.
