Hypnosis for Agoraphobia

Hypnosis for Agoraphobia

Do you feel anxious in open spaces, with the feeling that no one will be able to help you if you need it?
Or, on the other hand, do you feel overwhelmed in crowds or on public transportation, afraid you might have a panic attack?

Agoraphobia is a specific phobia characterized by a fear of open spaces and public places.
People with agoraphobia experience intense anxiety, or even panic, when they find themselves in these situations.
This fear is strong enough to prevent them from living or working normally.

Hypnosis for Fears and Phobias - Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia: the fear of open spaces or public places

Agoraphobia is a fairly common condition, though its severity varies widely.

For some people, even a simple trip on public transportation can become a real ordeal.
For others, it might be triggered, for example, while driving across a bridge, on an empty highway, or out in the open countryside.

The Causes of Agoraphobia

Following a traumatic event:
Exposure to a traumatic event or a stressful situation can increase the risk of developing agoraphobia. For example, a person who has experienced a panic attack in a public place may develop a fear of such places.
In such cases, it is important to consult a psychologist or psychotherapist.

Through gradual avoidance:
It all started with a simple, unpleasant experience—like a deserted, dark parking lot.
The person will gradually begin to avoid these kinds of places, and since each time they avoid them, they feel a sense of inner relief, their avoidance becomes increasingly pronounced. This intensifies the discomfort in the person’s mind, creating a full-blown phobia.

Psychological causes:
Open spaces, then, present a very different set of personal challenges: the fear of getting lost, or of losing one’s identity, of no longer being able to express oneself, of being defenseless in one’s social or professional life...

In addition,Studies have shown that people with a family history of anxiety disorders are more likely to develop agoraphobia.
This suggests that genetic factors and the social environment may play a role in the development of this phobia...

Symptoms of Agoraphobia

Physical Symptoms The most common symptoms are palpitations, sweating, trembling, a feeling of suffocation, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and sometimes chest pain.

Emotional symptoms These often include intense anxiety, panic, a sense of distress, a feeling of helplessness, and a loss of control.

In terms of behavior, this will mean:

  • l'Avoiding situations that cause anxiety' such as public transportation, shopping centers, or parking lots, as well as isolated locations such as bridges or tunnels,
  • dependence on a caregiver to leave their homes, drive, travel...
  • a restriction on social and professional activities such as going to the movies or the theater

The Case of Fear of Crowds

Fear of crowds—also known as enochlophobia or demophobia—is often linked to agoraphobia (but not always—for example, in cases of claustrophobia or a fear of public speaking).

At the root of the fear of crowds are traumatic experiences that triggered the fear of ’being crushed« by a restless or out-of-control crowd (for example, at a concert or a sporting event in a stadium). It can also be linked to an experience of anxiety or a panic attack combined with the fear of losing control or revealing one’s vulnerability in front of others.

It is also possible that, in addition to a fear of crowds, there may be a fear of infection—as, for example, in the case of coronavirus anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

How can you treat a fear of open spaces or public places?

There is no miracle cure for agoraphobia.
Medications can improve many symptoms (anxiety, fear of recurrence, panic attacks), but not always.

For trauma-induced agoraphobia, consult your doctor or a psychologist.

For fears that have developed as a result of avoidance or that are psychological in origin, thecognitive-behavioral therapy helps people identify and change the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to their fear.

The Exhibition This approach involves gradually exposing the person to the situation they fear.

Hypnosis for Agoraphobia

Therapeutic hypnosis is an excellent therapeutic tool for people suffering from agoraphobia.
Hypnosis does, in fact, allow people to gradually come to terms with difficult situations at their own pace, to break certain unconscious associations, and sometimes to establish a «mental barrier» between themselves and the situations that make them feel insecure.

Hypnosis, a form of deep relaxation that helps you let go:

Hypnotic trance is a state of deep relaxation in which a person views their situation differently, with detachment, allowing them to work with symbols without triggering their fears. They can also identify the beliefs that create these irrational fears, rework them, and transform them into more positive beliefs.

Hypnosis allows for a gentle approach to addressing fear:

This is someone who works at their own pace, especially when it comes to visualization exercises.

For example, to see yourself first just in front of a bridge in the distance, then as you get closer—first on foot, then by car, and so on...

Self-hypnosis tools for managing difficult situations:

By reinforcing the sense of relaxation you experience under hypnosis, we can provide you with a very powerful self-hypnosis tool that you can use in your daily life to stay calm and avoid feeling emotionally overwhelmed in difficult situations.

Is hypnosis effective for agoraphobia?

Hypnosis isn't magic, but it often works well for agoraphobia.

One of our customers who lives on the Island of Montreal would panic every time he had to take a bridge or the tunnel to leave the city, and had to be accompanied on most of his car trips...
He first had a video consultation with a member of the Solutions Hypnose team, and then managed to drive over to see her hypnotherapist on the South Shore!
