Hypnosis for Anger Management in Children

Managing Emotions in Children

Very broadly speaking, the brain is divided into three parts:

  • The reptilian brain, the oldest part of our brain, is responsible for survival and food procurement, as well as everything related to our protection.
  • The limbic system is the brain's emotional center.
  • The neocortex is the part of the brain that evolved last.
He is responsible for strategic thinking and analysis.
It is thanks to our neocortex that we are able to regulate our emotions.

Babies are born with a reptilian brain and a limbic system (the emotional brain) that are already fully functional, so young children are capable of experiencing emotions from a very early age.
However, the neocortex does not begin to mature until the age of 6 or 7.

Before that age, a child will have a very hard time regulating their emotional intensity.
One of the roles of parents is to be there to support their child as best they can through the emotions they're experiencing at that moment.

Hypnosis for Children to Help Manage Anger

What Hypnosis Can Do

Hypnosis helps tap into a child's inner resources to develop their ability to regulate their emotions (even before the age of 6 or 7).
It is indeed possible, starting at a very young age, to introduce tools into a child’s life.
As for me, I provide hypnosis therapy for children ages 5 and up.

As the child gets older (beyond age 7), these tools help the child better understand what is happening during hypnosis and develop their inner abilities on their own.

Hypnosis Sessions with Children: Specific Features and Procedure

Hypnosis for children consists of a session lasting about 45 minutes so as not to tax their concentration too much.

The session can take place in person or via VIDEO.
Surprisingly, children pick it up very easily via videoconference, whether on a computer or a tablet.
In fact, this helps them stay fully focused during the discussion—sometimes even more so than in the office!

How do I use hypnosis with children?

Instead of having a session where the child keeps their eyes closed the whole time without moving, we're going to make up a story.
Play and imagination will be emphasized to help children tap into their inner resources.
This is similar to magical thinking—that is, the act of linking emotions and inner resources to symbols or images that the child imagines.

The child will close their eyes and then imagine a setting, a landscape they'd like to visit.
Going forward, I’ll be there to guide him in bringing out the strengths we’ve identified together in advance—the ones he wants to develop.

For example, if a child is experiencing intense anger and tells me it feels like a volcano inside, we’ll work together to figure out what might help reduce the intensity of that volcanic outburst.
So, together with the child, we’ll use our imagination, and the child will come up with their own story. They might imagine water flowing down to calm the volcano inside, or a superhero who jumps inside the volcano and uses their powers to stop the eruption.
It is always the child who shapes his or her own story and incorporates his or her own symbols, drawing on his or her inner resources.

How do I structure the session?

During the first session with the child, we'll take 15 minutes to establish the therapeutic relationship.
Without therapeutic intervention, progress is significantly reduced, so this is a key step.
The child must trust his or her hypnotherapist.

Next, we'll spend another 15 minutes developing the story, the imaginative theme, and the resources that tie in with the chosen images.

Finally, we take a moment to let the child truly internalize these symbols—through drawing, for example.

The last few minutes of the session are set aside for the parents and me to provide feedback and discuss the symbols and story created by the child. This information can then be used outside of the hypnosis session.

How many sessions are needed?

After just one session, the child is so receptive to this type of work (which draws on the child’s own world and imagination) that we’ll be able to make progress on the initial issue in just a few sessions.

After the first session, we wait two weeks to see how the child and parents are applying the tools we provided. Based on the feedback we receive after two weeks, we determine whether another session is necessary or if the progress made is sufficient in their view.
