Hypnosis for Tics

Hypnosis for Tics

I blink frequently – especially when I'm stressed — and it's really awkward during business discussions with my clients…

My son has developed a sort of throat-clearing sound whenever he has to speak in front of the class and his classmates make fun of him at school…

Tics are sudden, rapid, and recurring movements or sounds.
They are often perceived as involuntary, even though they can sometimes be temporarily suppressed through conscious effort.
These symptoms can cause discomfort, stress, or even psychological distress, especially when they are misunderstood by those around the person.

Hypnosis is a very useful tool for reducing certain tics—especially those caused or exacerbated by stress.

The Different Types of Tics

Motor tics

Simple motor tics are brief, sudden movements of one or more muscle groups, such as blinking, shrugging, facial grimaces, or head jerks.

Complex motor tics are more elaborate and may appear intentional, such as when a person repeatedly touches objects or people, jumps, spins around, or mimics the movements of others (echopraxia)

Vocal and respiratory tics

Vocal tics and respiratory tics they, too, can be simple such as throat-clearing, sniffing, grunting, and clicking the tongue, but also complexes such as when a person repeats certain words or phrases (verbal tics), repeats words or phrases spoken by others (echolalia), or even socially unacceptable words (coprolalia).

Tics can be transitory (for less than a year), columns (lasting more than a year), or associated with more complex disorders, such as Tourette syndrome.

The Specific Case of Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, often associated with other disorders, such as ADHD or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Hypnosis for Tics in Children

Tics in Children

Tics are particularly common in children; they usually appear between the ages of 5 and 7, with the highest incidence occurring between the ages of 8 and 12.
In most cases, These tics are transitory : They last a few weeks or months before disappearing on their own.

However, for some children, tics may persist or become more severe, especially during times of stress, fatigue, or major changes (such as the start of the school year, moving, etc.).

If the tics persist, worsen, or affect your child’s social or school life, we recommend that you consult with your child’s pediatrician as soon as possible.

Hypnosis for Tics

Hypnosis is a complementary approach that is increasingly used to help people with tics. It is based on a altered state of consciousness, which allows individuals to tap into unconscious resources to better manage their symptoms.

How does hypnosis work on tics?

  • Reducing Stress and Anxiety : Hypnosis can help reduce emotional tension, which is often linked to an increase in tics.
  • Strengthening Voluntary Oversight : By working with suggestion and visualization, hypnosis helps develop better control over involuntary movements or sounds.
  • Changing Unconscious Patterns : Some tics are reinforced by habits or unconscious associations. Hypnosis makes it possible to "reprogram" these patterns.
  • Boosting Self-Confidence : By reducing the shame or fear associated with tics, hypnosis helps improve self-esteem.

Some techniques used in hypnosis to treat tics:

Your hypnotherapist will, of course, tailor the approach to your specific situation, but in general we use three main types of techniques:
Positive Visualization : Imagine situations without tics to build confidence.
Anchors : Associate a soothing gesture or thought with a state of calm.
Dissociation : Learn to "detach" from the emotion associated with the tic in order to reduce its intensity.

Hypnosis for Eye Tics and Vocal Tics

Testimonials...

Sophie (vocal tics with throat-clearing)
«I was constantly clearing my throat, especially during meetings at work. I was afraid my coworkers would think I was weird or rude. Through hypnosis, I discovered that this tic was linked to anxiety that I wasn’t even consciously aware of anymore. Thanks to visualization exercises and anchors, I’ve managed to significantly reduce this tic, and when it does occur, I’m aware of it. Today, I feel more confident, and I’m no longer afraid to speak up in meetings.»

Thomas, age 14 (eye tics and repeated blinking)
«Before I started hypnosis, I used to blink all the time, especially when I was stressed at school. The other students made fun of me, and I felt like I couldn’t help it. After a few hypnosis sessions, I learned to relax by imagining a soft light around my eyes. Now I blink less often, and when it does happen, I feel less panicked. Hypnosis has helped me regain control!”

The Limitations of Hypnosis in the Treatment of Tics

Hypnosis is not a miracle cure for tics and has certain limitations:

Effectiveness varies : Some clients respond very well to hypnosis, while others see little or no improvement.
The Need for Comprehensive Support : Hypnosis often needs to be combined with other approaches (cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication if necessary, etc.).
Customer Engagement : Hypnosis requires active participation and an open mind. Results depend on your motivation and the regularity of your sessions.
The Lack of a Definitive Cure : Hypnosis can help people better manage their tics, but it does not make them disappear permanently in every case.

When should you see a hypnotherapist for tics?

    Hypnosis is particularly recommended when:

    • Tics are exacerbated by stress or anxiety.
    • You're open to an alternative approach.
    • Tics have a significant impact on your quality of life.

A Holistic Approach to Better Managing Tics in Daily Life

Hypnosis offers an interesting approach to reducing the severity of tics and improving the well-being of those affected.
However, it should not be viewed as a standalone solution, but rather as a complementary tool within a comprehensive approach.
Every person is unique, and the best results are achieved by combining different methods (hypnosis, CBT, family support, etc.).

As hypnotherapists, we always recommend a initial medical and/or psychological evaluation to determine the best treatment strategy.
