What TYPE of HYPNOSIS should you choose?

What TYPE of HYPNOSIS should you choose?

When you're looking for a hypnotherapist, you'll hear about different types or forms of hypnosis.

There is Classical Hypnosis, Ericksonian Hypnosis, Humanistic Hypnosis, New Hypnosis, and others…

There are also specific terms depending on the purpose of using hypnosis.
For example, we can talk about'regressive hypnosis, transgenerational hypnosis, medical hypnosis, including, in particular, hypnosedation…

And let's not talk here about stage or street hypnosis, which are not forms of therapeutic hypnosis.

So, with all these different terms, how can you tell what you're dealing with and which type of hypnosis is right for your needs? The 4 Forms of Hypnosis - The Most Effective Form of Hypnosis - Ericksonian Hypnosis - Direct Hypnosis - Different Hypnosis Techniques - Different Types of Hypnosis - Which Type of Hypnosis Should You Choose?

What Is Hypnosis?

What is hypnosis?

An altered state of consciousness:

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness; it is a dynamic state between wakefulness and sleep that allows us to communicate with our subconscious mind.
It's a natural state that we experience several times a day—when we're driving, when we're daydreaming.
Our body is here, but our mind is somewhere else. We're experiencing what's called dissociation!

In summary, all types of hypnosis can induce this altered state of consciousness.

The Different Types of Hypnosis

What distinguishes the different forms of hypnosis, This is how the therapist induces and guides the person to reach a state of hypnosis.
Then, once the hypnotic state has been achieved, there is different ways to guide the client toward their goal.
That's where the concept of suggestion comes into play.

Simply put, a suggestion is an idea that the therapist presents to the client with the goal, first, of inducing a state of hypnosis (this is the induction phase), and then of bringing about change and/or helping the client move toward their goal.

Classical Hypnosis

The first type of hypnosis—which is actually the oldest—is the one that has been used since time immemorial but was formally established in 1841 by James Braid.
That's what's called classical hypnosis.

This is often the kind of hypnosis we picture—with a pendulum and someone saying, "Sleep, I want you to…"
This is obviously an exaggeration, and even if that’s how it used to be, what we remember today are the direct suggestions that directly influence the person regarding the subject of the change.

You'll then hear sentences like these:
"You now feel relaxed and are entering a state of relaxation."
or
"From now on, you'll feel more confident when this situation comes up again, and you'll..."

Ericksonian Hypnosis

Ericksonian hypnosis is named after the American psychiatrist Milton Erickson.
This is more of a therapeutic approach, involving a very skillful and strategic use of the person’s psychological reactions.
This very particular approach involves a indirect language, confusion, hidden or implied messages.
In fact, it was by modeling this specific language that Bandler and Grinder created NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming).

Sometimes, the unconscious mind puts up barriers to change, for various reasons.
Using this type of hypnosis makes it possible either to bypass these barriers or to allow the person to tap into their own resources in line with their goal.

New Hypnosis

New Hypnosis is inspired by Berheim's work, and the name "New Hypnosis" refers to the Bernheim's new school.

The language used here is very nuanced and more poetic; it is also inspired by Ericksonian hypnosis, but makes greater use of metaphors and more sophisticated protocols, combined with a more modern approach.
This form of hypnosis is actually a blend of classical hypnosis and Ericksonian hypnosis, NLP, and other personal development techniques.

Humanistic Hypnosis

This form of hypnosis is the only one that allows a person to enter an altered state of consciousness—not by becoming dissociated (body-mind or conscious-unconscious), but by becoming integrated.
In other words, this practice involves a single enhanced state of consciousness.

There’s no need to let go; on the contrary, we’re expanding our cognitive and sensory range.
The person will become aware of themselves, others, and the world around them.
This will allow her to discover what's «holding her back,» and then to work on it herself.
The suggestions used by the therapist are direct, and the therapist employs metaphorical and symbolic language that speaks directly to the unconscious mind.

So here are the four main types of hypnosis practiced in private practice.
Other forms of hypnosis are generally variations of these four types, with distinct characteristics and specific features depending on the approach.

So, what type of hypnosis should you choose?

And is there one type of hypnosis that's more effective than the others?

The answer is no!
It depends on the individual, their needs, the type of goal to be worked on, any fears they may have, and many other factors.

Ultimately, what matters most is not the type of hypnosis but the relationship with the therapist, their ethics, their experience, and... their training.
If you're looking for a hypnotherapist, here's a tip: check the name of the school and the number of hours of hypnosis training the person has completed.
This will put your mind at ease.
