Hypnosis for IMPOSTOR SYNDROME
Hello,
Impostor Syndrome affects many people: professionals, entrepreneurs, students, artists…
This persistent feeling of never being competent enough, of not deserving one’s position or achievements, and of living in constant fear of being «exposed» can become a major obstacle in both one’s professional and personal life.
How can hypnosis help alleviate imposter syndrome so you can break free and better express your potential?

What Is Impostor Syndrome?
«Impostor syndrome» was first defined in 1978 by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes.
Subsequently, the common term «impostor syndrome» came into use, which almost makes it seem like some kind of disorder.
Yet it is «normal» to feel a certain amount of apprehension when we venture into areas where we don’t feel competent or legitimate. This is the original definition of stress: a stimulus that helps us better adapt to a situation that is new to us.
But when it turns into a deep-seated doubt about our worth, when it holds us back from taking action, that we are no longer able to appreciate our successes, and often feel a fear of being exposed as a "fraud,", Then the imposter syndrome becomes a real obstacle.
Who is more likely to suffer from Impostor Syndrome?
According to Clance and Imes, this phenomenon is more common among individuals who grew up in an environment that was perfectionist and placed excessive value on intellectual and academic success.
Women, minorities, high-potential individuals, and professionals in highly competitive fields are more likely to experience Impostor Syndrome.
Valerie Young has described five types of Impostor Syndrome that affect different sensitive areas depending on the individual:
- The Perfectionist Sets goals that are too high, which can sometimes lead to an inability to take action until everything is perfect. He or she is never satisfied with the results, and this is often combined with a strong need for control and difficulty delegating.
- Superman/Superwoman will extend this to all areas of his life, so that he’ll not only be at the top of his game professionally but also in his relationship, family life, social life, and, of course, always in great shape…
- The Expert will want to know everything about the subject, at the risk of procrastinating and becoming paralyzed—unable to take action until they know everything....
- The «soloist» who wants to succeed on their own, without the help of others, because otherwise success has no value
- And what she calls the «natural genius» Anyone who wants to succeed starting on the 1ster effortlessly, thanks to his «talent.» Maybe that worked when I was a kid, or for a while, but now I avoid situations where I won’t be the best. The effort and the time it takes to learn—that would just prove that I’m mediocre…
Finally, according to the research by Carol Dweck on fixed mindsets and growth mindsets, the people with a fixed mindset Those who believe their abilities are innate are more likely to experience imposter syndrome.
The Consequences of Impostor Syndrome
Regardless of the form of Impostor Syndrome, the consequences can be quite debilitating for the person affected, including:
- A chronic feeling of doubts about his abilities, his legitimacy, and even his personal worth, which will, among other things, hinder his professional development.
- From stress, anxiety, thoughts that go round and round in your head—the “I should have,” “I should…”—and that waste energy unnecessarily
- From the procrastination and sometimes even self-sabotage to avoid situations that might reveal my shortcomings.

How Can You Overcome Impostor Syndrome?
Impostor Syndrome can be deeply ingrained in us—and very persistent!
Because it is fundamentally based on negative or limiting beliefs about ourselves:
I'm not capable, I'm not qualified…
And our beliefs—they’ve often been with us for a very long time, often beginning in childhood, and reinforced by their family, school, and social environments…
So it's hard to question them, because they've shaped our personalities and our lives so much.
With a classic bias – confirmation bias – which leads us to prefer changing our interpretation of reality to confirm our beliefs rather than questioning them.
So if I run into difficulties on a project—even if it has nothing to do with me—well, that just goes to show that I'm not up to the task…
This creates a sort of vicious cycle of lost self-confidence that reinforces my negative beliefs about myself, and so on…
Hypnosis for Impostor Syndrome: How Does It Work?
The main challenge is to change these negative beliefs about yourselves, and a belief—that can be very hard to shake, especially if it has shaped our lives.
And just because you're aware of it on a rational level doesn't mean it's easy to change!
This is why therapeutic hypnosis is so valuable for working at the level of the unconscious mind.
To identify these beliefs, understand their purpose, what they've enabled you to do, and also when they become a hindrance.
And then challenge them and make them more flexible by replacing negative thought patterns with positive affirmations.
In Hypnosis for Impostor Syndrome, we will also work on in terms of self-confidence and self-esteem to highlight strengths, encourage taking action «even if it’s not perfect,» and break free from self-sabotaging patterns.
And also by learning to recognize your successes and celebrate them!
Sometimes we'll include exercises for you to do at home:
- Listen to the suggestions from your session again to help them take root more deeply, and feed your inner dialogue with positive affirmations,
- Keep a «success journal» in which you write down three achievements every day—even small ones—to foster a more positive view of yourself,
- Try visualizing your future success, or use the «as if» technique to adopt the attitude of a self-confident person and gradually transform how you feel…

How Audrey Overcame Her Imposter Syndrome at Work...
Audrey, a consultant at a consulting firm, had excellent results and performance reviews but lived with the constant fear of not measuring up and put enormous pressure on herself.
During her hypnosis sessions, she identified the beliefs underlying her insecurity in order to «soften» them and, at the same time, let go of some of them.
And she has used anchoring techniques to build self-confidence, particularly in stressful work situations.
