Hypnosis for the FEAR of DRIVING (Amaxophobia)
Are you afraid of driving or afraid of being in a car?
Or are you afraid of riding as a passenger in a car?
Amaxophobia—the fear of driving or the fear of being in a car— is a fairly common specific phobia that can have a significant impact on daily life, limiting the independence and mobility of those who suffer from it.
Among the various therapeutic approaches available, Therapeutic hypnosis is a very interesting tool for helping people overcome the fear of driving...

What is Amaxophobia?
Amaxophobia is characterized by an intense and irrational fear of driving or being in a moving vehicle.
This fear can vary in intensity, ranging from mild apprehension to paralyzing terror.
It can also be triggered by certain environments—for example, a fear of driving on the highway or a fear of driving in winter—or by certain circumstances, such as a fear of driving alone.
Symptoms and Impact of the Fear of Driving
Symptoms of amaxophobia may include a rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, nausea, and a feeling of intense panic at the thought of driving or being in a vehicle.
This can be even more intense in the event of poor road conditions, heavy traffic, or while driving through a tunnel or across a bridge, when the driver can’t see a way to stop easily. Or if images of accidents start to come to mind.
This phobia is often misunderstood by those around the person and can seriously limit a person's ability to lead a normal life, affecting their professional life, social relationships, and overall well-being.
The fear of driving is sometimes so intense that it can lead to social avoidance, anxiety, or even depression.
If this applies to you, a mental health professional can provide you with medical and psychological support.
The Causes of Amaxophobia
The causes of amaxophobia are varied and may include past traumatic experiences, such as car accidents or stressful events related to driving.
If your fear of driving or being in a car is related to a traumatic event, a psychologist or psychotherapist can help you.
Psychological factors, such as generalized anxiety, can contribute to the development of this phobia: for example, the fear of feeling faint or making a sudden movement and losing control of the vehicle.

The fear of riding as a passenger in a car
An older female client came to see us because of her intense fear of riding in cars.
Yes, she was anxious about driving on her own.
But above all, she couldn't stand being driven around—especially by her husband (for nearly 40 years!).
It had become a vicious cycle: he thought he was helping her by driving her, but she didn't dare tell him to slow down or keep more distance…Every time she moved, she would close her eyes, tense every muscle in her body, and be on the verge of panic...
Of course, we worked on her fear of driving, but also on how to express her needs and ask her husband to drive in a more tactful way—and that greatly improved the situation! 😊
Therapeutic Hypnosis for Amaxophobia
Hypnosis is a state of consciousness that combines deep relaxation and intense concentration.
Our minds are then more receptive to positive suggestions and more open to change (changes in behavior, changes in beliefs, changes in perspective, etc.)
In general, therapeutic hypnosis helps reduce stress and anxiety, thereby promoting a state of calm and mental relaxation.
Your hypnotherapist will then offer suggestions to help you reprogram certain emotional and behavioral responses.
Hypnosis will be used to treat amaxophobia, specifically to:
- Identify situations, thoughts, or feelings that trigger a fear of driving
- Using the Power of Imagination for Desensitization in the face of these situations.
By changing the negative perception or perceived significance of these situations, you can mentally prepare yourself for them and reduce anxiety. - Developing Adaptation Strategies and better stress management when driving or being driven.
- Changing Negative Thoughts About Yourself and Building Self-Confidence to reduce avoidance behaviors
What happens during a hypnosis session for the fear of driving?
A hypnosis session to address amaxophobia begins with a discussion during which your hypnotherapist gathers information about the specific situations, triggers, and symptoms of your fear of driving.
So that we can then work together to clearly define your goals.
During the induction phase, your hypnotherapist guides you into this state of deep relaxation and altered consciousness known as hypnosis.
He or she will then offer you suggestions and affirmations to reinforce positive beliefs and reduce negative thoughts related to situations that cause you anxiety.
Visualization and relaxation techniques are also used to help you feel calmer and more confident and to mentally prepare yourself for certain anxiety-provoking situations. This may include, for example, gradual desensitization techniques or visualizing successful behavior.
Finally, you return to your normal state of consciousness and conclude the session with your hypnotherapist.
After the session, you will be encouraged to continue the work on your own with relaxation, visualization, or self-hypnosis exercises.
You'll also observe the changes in your daily life so you can refine and continue the work during the next session.
