Hypnosis to Better Manage SHAME and GUILT
A few years ago, a client came in for counseling to address his anxiety and alcohol use.
He talks about his business failure several years ago and the shame he feels.
So much so that only those closest to him know about it. As far as his extended family, neighbors, and professional acquaintances are concerned, he has officially taken early retirement…(The story continues at the end of the article…)
Shame: Emotion or Feeling?
Shame can be an emotion
That is, an immediate and generally short-lived reaction to a situation perceived as embarrassing, humiliating, or at odds with social or personal norms. Associated reactions may include blushing, sweating, or the urge to hide.
But shame can also be a feeling, which can therefore linger long after the initial emotion has faded.
This is often accompanied by a vicious cycle of ruminating on the triggering event, with the inability to talk about it further intensifying the sense of shame, which becomes increasingly central—even obsessive—in the person’s life.
This can profoundly influence the way a person perceives themselves and interacts with the world, shape their behavior—particularly their social behavior—and affect their self-esteem over an extended period.

The Difference Between Shame and Guilt
When I fail, or find myself in a situation where I feel I’m not measuring up—whether to my own expectations or those of my social group—or after violating a social or moral norm, I may experience feelings of inadequacy, incompetence, and inferiority.
For example, after cheating on an exam, lying, or refusing to help someone in need.
We may then feel shame, guilt, or a mixture of the two.
We generally distinguish between:
- Guilt that is more focused on a specific action or behavior often accompanied by the realization that they have wronged someone and the desire to make amends.
- Shame that is directed more inward—toward one’s own imperfections—and that undermines one’s self-image and self-esteem.
Shame can lead to a desire to hide or can also turn into aggression in an attempt to protect the ego.
Even though these feelings are unpleasant to experience, they serve a social purpose: they prompt the person to reflect on the impact of their actions, to try to make amends, and eventually to change their behavior to better align with the group’s values and norms.
Triggers and Consequences of Shame:
Triggers of shame may be related to:
- A failure—or something perceived as such—accompanied by a feeling of falling short of personal, family, or social expectations.
- Behaviors that conflict with a person's deeply held values
- Social judgment stemming from a fear of ridicule, rejection, or humiliation.
Sometimes these two aspects overlap, and successive experiences can even build upon one another, profoundly affecting a person’s life.
In fact, the consequences of shame can be devastating, both psychologically and physically, including:
- Low self-esteem accompanied by feelings of inadequacy or imposter syndrome
- Social isolation to avoid situations where one might be judged.
- Psychological, behavioral, and even physiological disorders: anxiety, depression, social avoidance, and sometimes eating disorders, addictions…
How Hypnosis Can Help You Overcome Shame and Guilt
Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that induces a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration.
This state, known as a hypnotic trance, allows us to work on our behaviors and thoughts at the unconscious or automatic level.
When it comes to shame or guilt, therapeutic hypnosis can help:
- Reducing stress and anxiety:
In a calmer, more detached state, the person will work on separating events from their inner dialogue and emotional experiences.
To finally express one's emotions—sometimes verbally with the hypnotherapist, or symbolically within oneself. - Changing Your Perspective on situations that trigger feelings of shame or guilt.
To rework them in a subtle way—often symbolically or metaphorically—to recontextualize them and reduce their emotional impact. - Reprogramming Limiting Beliefs:
The hypnotic state can provide new perspectives on past events and help develop more positive beliefs, helping to replace feelings of shame with feelings of self-acceptance.
And in cases of guilt, to develop strategies for making amends for past behavior and freeing oneself from guilt. - Building Self-Esteem:
Hypnotic suggestions may include positive affirmations and visualizations to boost self-confidence and self-esteem.

After an intense session, the bag filled with stones was set down on the ground, the hot-air balloon took off, and the customer—a big, burly man in his 50s—had tears of relief in his eyes…
