The Couple: A Reflection of Our Inner State

A Mirror of Ourselves

To begin with, it's really interesting to see that the couple is the ultimate framework for how we experience our inner life. Indeed, a couple represents the experience of encountering the other, and the other serves as a mirror of ourselves.

That's why, in a relationship with a partner—one that we experience day to day—we invest a lot of time and a great deal of intensity. So everything is heightened.

A relationship is truly the arena where our emotional self-management, our intelligence, and our inner maturity are put to the test. It’s only natural that it can become a place of clashes, conflicts, and, in any case, challenges.
It offers an opportunity to learn about ourselves if we face each obstacle head-on.

Couples Coaching: Working Toward Reconnection in a Relationship

Barriers and Defense Mechanisms in Romantic Relationships

Reconnection means being able to show care, kindness, and tenderness toward your partner.

How do you get that? This is achieved by allowing the defense systems to disappear.
Because our defense mechanisms kick in when we feel threatened. In particular, they cause us to become aggressive or to attack in order to protect ourselves.

So when I say "attack," that’s a pretty strong word, but you can indeed be in a less friendly, more defensive, and firmer state of mind.
This triggers a reaction from the partner, who also becomes aggressive and defensive.

On the contrary, when defense systems are allowed to disappear for a time, We leave more room for the heart to open.

What helps break down barriers?

When we feel safe, our hearts open up, and we feel ready to listen to our partner with care and kindness.

In couples coaching using the "Imago" therapeutic method, the partners are encouraged to take turns being the sender (the one who speaks) and the receiver (the one who listens).

The receiver's instruction is not to respond to what the sender says.
However, the listener is encouraged to regularly paraphrase what they hear from the speaker.
This allows the speaker to feel fully heard and understood.

It works like magic every time!

Embracing Vulnerability in a Relationship

Vulnerability: Strength and Openness Toward Others

When one person agrees to be vulnerable, it usually encourages the other to do the same.
He wants to take care of this person who is right there, revealing her most vulnerable side.
This is how we create a virtuous cycle of listening, connection, and care.
So, once this safe space is established, we’ll be able to address the challenges that each person is facing in the relationship.

Discussing everyone's concerns and needs

These may be issues and needs that come up regularly.
So, we're going to try to identify each person's role in creating these recurring situations.

What are each person’s emotional patterns, or areas of reactivity? Once these have been identified, we can meet for individual sessions to address each person’s specific issues, explore the needs that have emerged, and work through areas of vulnerability.

If there are resources available to help each partner learn how to better handle certain situations, we will provide them during individual sessions. So this is really a comprehensive approach to the couple’s relationship, and—if desired (though it’s not mandatory)—it can enhance the success of the couples’ coaching to also attend a few individual sessions to build the necessary resources for the relationship.

Couples Coaching: Taking Both Partners in the Relationship into Account

What's really important is that both partners are willing to participate in this one-on-one couples coaching.
That is the key to success and well-being in a relationship.

Each person's emotional intelligence is at the heart of the relationship

The next step is to work on each person's emotional intelligence.
Because, as mentioned at the beginning, communication is the key to creating a peaceful atmosphere within a relationship and fostering love, kindness, and well-being. Emotional intelligence is essential for effective communication.

So emotional intelligence is, first and foremost, an individual aspect.
How do I identify the emotions I'm feeling? How do I manage my emotions?

It then takes on a more collective dimension.
How can I recognize the emotions that the other person is experiencing?

When it becomes clear that one of the partners may have more difficulty identifying their emotions and recognizing that they are experiencing them, this may be an opportunity to focus more on individual sessions, to help them develop this emotional intelligence in relation to themselves.

When it comes to communication, we'll make extensive use of Nonviolent Communication tools to learn how to communicate effectively with our partner.

So, I look forward to working together to build love within our relationship, as well as kindness—both within our relationship and toward ourselves and society at large.

Well then, we look forward to working to improve your well-being!
