Am I HYPNOTIZABLE? Am I RECEPTIVE to hypnosis?

Hello,

The question « Am I susceptible to hypnosis? »?" is a question frequently asked by those considering seeking therapeutic hypnosis.
It reflects expectations, doubts, and sometimes fears.

So, is everyone susceptible to hypnosis?

Why do some people seem to enter a state of hypnosis easily, while others say they have difficulty doing so?

Am I susceptible to hypnosis?

Hypnosis: A Natural State

Before discussing susceptibility to hypnosis, it is essential to understand what hypnosis is.
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a magical or supernatural state.

It is an altered state of consciousness—one that is perfectly natural—that each of us already experiences every day.
- Do you remember those times when you're so engrossed in a book or a movie that you lose track of time?
- Or when you're driving down a familiar road and realize you've arrived without remembering the details of the trip?

These are examples of states similar to hypnosis.

Hypnosis harnesses the brain’s natural ability to focus intensely on an idea, an image, or a sensation, while temporarily setting aside other stimuli.
This potential exists in all human beings, even though it manifests itself differently from person to person.

Factors Influencing Susceptibility to Hypnosis

While anyone can theoretically enter a state of hypnosis, the experience and depth of that state vary from person to person.

Several factors influence hypnotizability:

  • The Relationship with the Hypnotherapist : Trust is an absolute necessity.
  • Imagination : People with vivid and creative imaginations are often more receptive to hypnosis because they can easily visualize and feel the suggestions.
  • The ability to concentrate : The ability to focus one's attention on an idea or a sensation is a major asset when entering a state of hypnosis.
  • Reason: This is undoubtedly one of the most decisive factors. Someone who sincerely wants to explore hypnosis—who is curious and open-minded—will be much more likely to experience its effects.
  • The Environment : A quiet environment, free from distractions, helps induce hypnosis.

Possible Obstacles to Entering a State of Hypnosis

Some people think they aren't suggestible because they weren't able to go into a hypnotic state on their first try.

Certain limitations may temporarily affect your experience:

  • Cultural biases:
The image of hypnosis portrayed in movies or stage shows can influence a person’s perception of this practice.
The idea that you have to be «weak-minded» to be hypnotized is a myth that can create mental blocks.
  • The fear of losing control :
Some people are afraid of becoming vulnerable or of revealing information they want to keep private.
In reality, hypnosis never causes you to lose your free will.
  • Mistrust :
If the therapist or the approach doesn't seem trustworthy, it can be hard to let go.
  • When it's just not the right time for you:
Intense stress, excessive fatigue, or hypervigilance can make it more difficult to enter a hypnotic state.
In these cases, we’ll start by working with you on these aspects to lay the groundwork.

3 key conditions for being receptive to hypnosis:

1- Is that really what you want?

If you've made an appointment, we can assume that you want to do so—at least rationally—but do you really want to?
That’s why we spend time—especially during the first session—clarifying your goal and addressing potential obstacles.

And also to understand the potential secondary benefits of the change you want to make.
Because you may rationally say that you want to quit smoking, but you’re so afraid of gaining weight or missing out on important social moments with your friends who smoke that, in fact, part of you —if we don’t reassure that part of you—might not really want to quit smoking and therefore might not let yourself go with the hypnosis, just in case it works…

2 - Do you feel confident?

Without trust, I doubt you'd let yourself go, even if I lulled you with my sweet voice.
The quality of the relationship and the trust you build with your hypnotherapist will be crucial.

3 - Finally, are we using the right technique for you?

Of course, we're trying out what we think is a good channel and a good pace for you.
Some people are more visual and easily embark on grand imaginary journeys, while others are more kinesthetic and rely primarily on their inner feelings.
Some people will be almost eager to do it, while others will be quite happy to take the time to relax and enter a state of hypnosis.

So yes, you can be hypnotized if you want to be, within a relationship of trust and at a pace and in a way that work for you.
